Good Bye September

September 30th, 2008 at 3:30 pm by Michelle Halsne

Last run of the month, a whole 2 miles.  Yes that’s sarcasms.  I am not happy with my September, I don’t think I hit a single goal.  Certainly not running goals, but not work goals either.   I am just going to say goodbye to September and leave it in the rear view mirror.  I am facing forward.

I just want to note the disappointment I am feeling so I have the right motivation to do whatever is necessary to not feel this way again at the end of October.  I will take some time and right some tangible goals for the 30 days.

Web-eating

September 24th, 2008 at 8:00 am by Michelle Halsne

Web-eater wanted! apply online.  I hit a quiet trail behind the library today, apparently I was the first person on the trail this morning as I had to take on the webs strung across the trail.  Usually I run behind someone taller so I don’t have to face the webs, literally.

This is the type of run I need to do to get back in shape.  I kept my average heart-rate in the perfect training zone for me and also did over 1,000 feet of climbing in an hour.  I am only a tiny bit discouraged that the pace I had to run was slower than expected to keep my heart-rate in range.  I like the discipline aspect of running slower.

Warm up and …..

September 23rd, 2008 at 3:00 pm by Michelle Halsne

Ran 16 minutes with the kids the workout was a ladder, run 3 min. hard, 3 min. easy, 2 min. hard. 2 min. easy, 1 minute hard, 1 min. easy.  The we did some down hill striders working on running techniques and relaxation when tired.

When I got home I wanted a little more of a workout in, but I didn’t have running legs.  I did an indoors strength workout I used to do in hotel rooms when I traveled a lot for work.  Push-ups, sit-ups, and stretching.  Truth be told I put my IPOD on and dance like a teenager, luckily my own teenager was not aware of my display of  ”grinding it out”.   Hard to put that in a category on my workout chart, broke a sweat, heart-rate up and lots of abs and hips.

On Demand Yoga

September 21st, 2008 at 12:00 pm by Michelle Halsne

Wanted to get a flexibility workout in to finish up a good first week back in training.  My hot yoga friends were not around to go to class with, and I did not want to go alone, so I dialed up yoga on my cable on demand feature.  Pretty good yoga for free and in my living room.  I barely got out of my pajamas into some of my old not so flattering old 1990s style shorts.   This was a good alternative to heading out and spending time from home.  My 14 year old harassed me for a while and then joined for a while.   Once we were finished we spent some  time together in the kitchen, something we both enjoy, but don’t do enough.

Mukilteo Trails

September 20th, 2008 at 7:00 am by Michelle Halsne

Living in Mukilteo for 4 years and never knowing about the trails at Japanese Gulch is embarrassing for self defined trail runner.  Embarrassment aside, I am so happy to be introduced to the trails right here in my backyard.  Once again the Downsound Racing connection pays off big.   Bob from the group took me out this morning for the first half of his 2 plus hour run on the trails.  I managed to keep up with him for the loop, if I had to guess my distance I would have said about 7 miles…..but thanks to my new Garmin 405 I know the truth, I ran under 6!  Sometimes the truth really hurts.  But wow look at the elevation gain and loss that’s good to see!

X-Country first meet

September 18th, 2008 at 3:51 am by Michelle Halsne

My team rocked it today.  Each of my kids exceeded expectations.  1.48 mile course.  All my kids finished in PR times from 5:45/mi for my top 8th grade boys to 10:12 for my slowest 7th grade girl, whose previous best mile was 13 minutes.  In my real life I don’t really have time to coach middle school cross country, but I am so glad that I have this opportunity

Western States, here I come again

September 17th, 2008 at 6:00 am by Michelle Halsne

It’s official, I am back in!  Entries to last years starters were sent out in an email Monday and I confirmed my spot.  This morning on my run I thought if 40 minutes is this tough how can I run for 24 hours?  But I know I can do it and I have a long time to bring my fitness back however slowly I must.  I have a lot of muscle soreness, sadly, from my  short run earlier this week, more importantly no knee pain today!  Maybe just maybe my problem was an overuse injury and I have let the body take of itself and heal over the last 7 weeks.

Met up with the Down Sound Racers this morning some of them did the Black Diamond Tri this weekend.  The race reports were pretty rough.  These are true Iron men, extremely talented athletes and they had some troubles out there.  It must be  one tough course.  Even though I am slow and sucking air, they welcomed me back graciously, love our community.  Now they all begin training for their Ironman next June, it is going to be  a fun 9 months!

Met the parents

September 15th, 2008 at 4:15 pm by Michelle Halsne

Had team parent meeting today for my X-Country kids.  Between practice and the meeting decided to sneak in a quick run.  The sun was so beautiful today it was so warm I could not say no.   I ran around the school and took a wet wipe bath before the meeting.  The parents were great and I feel lucky to be connected to my community.  I was a little sore from yesterday’s run, but well on my way to my goal for the week.

I want it back

September 14th, 2008 at 12:30 pm by Michelle Halsne

I want to be a runner again.  I need to be a runner again. I want it back.  One mile at a time.  Today was the longest I have ran since dropping out of my 50 mile race and it pushed me to my limits.  It is humbling to know I have to crawl myself back into shape.  I ran a lot harder than I should have.  This is a simple four mile loop that I am very familiar with and I wanted to mark my current aerobic condition.  Well the truth is I am out of shape, compared to where I want to be.  However I was able to run the entire distance and at a decent pace.

My goal for this week is to run 3 times and log 10 miles.  Not a lofty goal big picure, but a reasonable goal for now.

Western States Pacer finish 2nd place

September 11th, 2008 at 3:30 am by Michelle Halsne

While I am playing around with middle school kids and testing my knee for ability to train again, my WS Pacer Pierre goes out and finishes second in the grueling Stevens Creek 50k http://www.stevenscreek.com/stevenscreek50k.html

What a great course, the ugly kind that all ultra runners love.  Great job to him.  You are an inspiration Pierre!
