Mini Yazzo Workout

March 25th, 2008 , 5:30 pm by Michelle Halsne

Started out the door with the intention of running up to nine miles at no particular pace.  As I top the hill outside my house the evening clouds promised showers were on the way.  I did not want to get caught 4 miles away from home a downpour so I headed to the high-school track.

Doing 800 repeats is great for marathon training no doubt, however I am not so sure they hold any value when training for a 24-30 hour event.  But the old track athlete in me would not allow for simple jogging around the oval.

There was 2 field hockey team on the field clearly warming up for a game, this sport has really come from an infancy in the area to becoming a real alternative for our youth.  I started and my first 800 felt pretty good, my times:

3:25……3:24……3:23………..3:22   I was pretty happy with the consistency.  The game was about to begin and it was clear my presence was not completely appreciated.  I think some were afraid for my safety as balls were flying around and teenage boys (men) were behind these tosses.  The field hockey ball is remarkable dense, I picked up a few and rolled back to their owners.  So on my next 800 I cut it short to a 400……1:34.

I headed back home just as the sky opened up and let loose heavy rain, those poor parents having to sit in the rain and watch the game for the next hour….

of course 800s can be good training for a 100 mile race… you just need to start doing 50 x 800 and work you way up to 100 x 800!

Very funny Andrea….. I was just happy to know I still have some speed left so when I do a road marathon again I can hope for a 3:30 finish!
