When you look good, you feel good and you run better. This is not a scientific fact but it sure is true for me. In trying to keep motivated and reward myself for milestones I decided that every 300 miles I would buy myself something new for running. Last time I bought 2 new pair of shoes. After coming home from
Oregon 8 hours in the car, and watching my track alma mater KU squeak by Davidson into the final four. I went for my run. I was strutting same fancy new clothes to day on my workout. I bought new Pearl Izumi gear this weekend. I bought the infinity tight, Schnell top, Accelerator Softshell jacket and the silk lite socks.
Not only did the clothes feel amazing but they made me feel faster, stronger, younger, & more fit can new clothes really do that? Pearl Izumi is really clothing for cyclist but I was amazed at the support my legs received from the tights. I had recently ran in a pair of tights that I bought 9 years ago from Road Runners club, yes they held up for nine years! Wow what a difference in technology and fit. I can’t wait to run another 300 miles so I can go get more Pearl Izumi gear.
My work out today was 7 miles followed by drills on the track: Lunges, high knees, bottom kicks, striders and accelerators.

Got up before heading to the conference and did a simple 5 miles with Lisa. The kicker is it was 5 degrees outside. Burrrrr. It was cool to put the fresh footprints in the snow. If you look at Lisa’s blog you will see what happened when we analyzed her footprints….very interesting! The meeting ended early which meant some sales tax free outlet mall shopping! I bought the cutest running outfit from Pearl Izumi,,,,black and pink. I always say looking good is half the battle! We head home tomorrow, I will try to run when I get back, but the Kansas game is on and that is way more important Go Jayhawks.

Started out the door with the intention of running up to nine miles at no particular pace. As I top the hill outside my house the evening clouds promised showers were on the way. I did not want to get caught 4 miles away from home a downpour so I headed to the high-school track.
Doing 800 repeats is great for marathon training no doubt, however I am not so sure they hold any value when training for a 24-30 hour event. But the old track athlete in me would not allow for simple jogging around the oval.
There was 2 field hockey team on the field clearly warming up for a game, this sport has really come from an infancy in the area to becoming a real alternative for our youth. I started and my first 800 felt pretty good, my times:
3:25……3:24……3:23………..3:22 I was pretty happy with the consistency. The game was about to begin and it was clear my presence was not completely appreciated. I think some were afraid for my safety as balls were flying around and teenage boys (men) were behind these tosses. The field hockey ball is remarkable dense, I picked up a few and rolled back to their owners. So on my next 800 I cut it short to a 400……1:34.
I headed back home just as the sky opened up and let loose heavy rain, those poor parents having to sit in the rain and watch the game for the next hour….

Good decision to run today. Perfect weather about 36 degrees at start worked its way up mid 50s over the run. Was able to run the first 13 in sub 8/mi pace. Kind of fell apart after 17, but very happy overall. Lisa, Andrea and I all hit our goals or even beat them. The other 2 will go to Boston next month and boy are they ready, looking strong and fit!
I now have less than 100 days to wrap up my preparations for Western States….crunchtime. I decided today that I need to use something other than GU for refueling, it is fast becoming a little repulsive to me on the long runs. I will experiment with other gels, fluids etc…
Daughter Beth gave me 18 new songs for the race my favorite “Roll” by Flo Rider…great base!

After 9 days of yuk, today I finally feel well enough to run. But I will not run today as I will attempt to complete the 20 mile race I have been signed for as a part of a series that began January 1st. No expectation, may have to walk plenty. I will bring my inhaler as the residual of my flu is a reactive airway.
On a side note totally enjoying March Madness I have Duke picked all the way and the were sad last night against Belmont…who the heck is Belmont???

I am so sad that this cold or flu or whatever I have has completely kicked my butt for a week. It seems life keeps gettting in the way of stringing together the type workouts I need to be successful in my 100 mile race. I am not worried yet….I have 100 days left and that should be enough given my overall level of fitness and ability. I plan to run the 20 mile race this weekend hopefully can get a short run in by the end of the week. For today my victory is finishing all the laundry and clearing my desk of a 6 week old “to do” pile. Good news….doctor gave me top shelf cough medicine so I will finally sleep tonight!
