On the road in California, staying in Hollywood. The hotel is very nice but the neighborhood is suspect for running alone outside. I decided to play with the incline on the treadmill and really work on climbing at a sub 24 hour 100 mile pace. I want to learn what it feels like so I can recall this pace when I am dead tired and need to climb. Not as “sexy” as running fast, but I am hoping it is the right thing to do in my training.

The question for me was how tight are my hamstrings really? I know being a long distance runner and a non stretching kinda girl my hamstrings would be ubber tight. Today in yoga, after running 5 miles on the treadmill, I found out how rigid they really are.
I cannot sit with my legs outstretched in front of me without bending my knees. When the instructor said “now do your forward fold”, I could not even make a 90 degree angle with my torso and legs, much less reach for my toes. She looked at me as if I was ignoring her request to bring my head toward my knees. Just the act of getting the back of knees close to floor without leaning backwards caused shaking in my quads and pain, yes pain, in my upper hamstring. Now that’s tight!
The morale of my story is: I fully acknowledge to achieve optimal results and the best chance of finishing the Western States 100 mile race this summer my training must include yoga. A truly humbling experience

The Sammamish River Trail runs 10.9 miles along the Sammamish River from Bothell to Marymoor Park in Redmond I needed to start my week with a little distance run. Hills were not an option as I am still beat up from the race this weekend. Ran an out and back for a total of just over 13 miles. The goal is to be less sore tomorrow than I was yesterday…profound!

Beautiful weather and perfect conditions for a long hard run. Ran the first mile in 7:15 which I knew was too fast. I paid for, by mile 13 I was looking for a ride to the finish. Happy with my overall pace of 7:47 a little behind goal pace of 7:45. There were a lot of elite women in the race, running sub 6 minute and making it look easy. I think several are using this series of races for Marathon Olympic trials training as the last race is 20 miles four weeks from now. I will need to take the next 4 weeks and do some series long run to prepare for the 20.

16 miles on the Tolt Pipleline. I picked up the ski slope style ascent of the Tolt off off the Sammamish River Trail. Headed west up the pipeline. This section of the pipeline has four or five major climbs over 8 miles. The total ascent/descent for this run was 2500 ft each way out and back. I knew I needed to do a punishing run today as this was only my second run of the week. I had a heavy work and travel week, putting in 16 hours on Friday. I am sad about missing key workouts this week. It is nearly impossible to balance my hectic business schedule with the need to run. Better luck next week. But already have a full schedule Monday, which is supposed to be a holiday. I need to figure out a way to count my driving and fkying miles as cross training.

Ran 18 miles in under 3 hours. This is the first time I have ran this distance on the road in a very long time. Was expecting to be a little more beat up, but as of now I feel good.
