Vaseline: Can’t live without it

January 6th, 2008 at 8:00 am by Michelle Halsne

Vaseline is my friend.  There very few runs I go on without applying gobs of Vaseline on my feet.  I always apply it on cold days, for me this is anything under 40 degrees.  Wimpy, but I suffer from a condition known as Raynauds Syndrome: Definition - Episodic vasospasm (constriction of small arteries) of the digits. It is characterized by digital blanching, cyanosis(blue), a feeling of numbness or dulled sensory response and rubor (red) after cold exposure and rewarming.  I have found that Vaseline acts as an extra insulator for my feet and the Raynauds can be better managed during long runs.  The other obvious benefit of Vaseline is lubrication, I very rarely get blisters.  This weekend was a testimony to my love affair with petroleum jelly.  I completed 22 miles of running in the cold and rain and my feet stayed toasty warm and blister free. My 12 miles today with Lisa, Mitch & Shelly was actually enjoyable and relatively easy as we kept the pace comfortable.  There was a long hill at mile nine that was almost a mile long I am pleased to announce I have no joint soreness or muscle tightness going up this hill.  I am pleased with my progress in 2008, even though it has only been a week.

10 miles in the wind

The goal is to learn to run with tired muscles .  Tomorrow I will be sufficiently tired, so the 12 miles should be interesting.

K’hill’er day

January 3rd, 2008 at 3:00 pm by Michelle Halsne

There is this hill near my neighborhood that is 1.4 miles.  It is a long grinder and relentless in its climb.  I am not sure what the elevation gain/loss is, but it is long and difficult enough to force me to a walk at least once during the climb.  Today in the rain I decided to do it twice.

My goal is to work toward doing this repeat workout without the need to slow to a walk for any portion of the hill.  I drove to the county parking lot so I could end on the downhill, smart! The park at the end of the hill is on
Puget Sound so next time I do this workout I will add the extra distance to the water.
